Mayoral Candidate of Orange

Two years out of high school, Foothill alumni John Russo is running for mayor of the city of Orange.
In an interview, Russo stated that during his years in high school, he never imagined himself running for mayor of Orange.
The idea of running for mayor came to him in December 2017, when he realized he wanted to bring a fresh perspective to the future of Orange.
Russo claimed his inspiration to run was mostly internal, and almost all of the decisions were made by himself. “There are some things you can’t learn in a textbook. I didn’t take a class on campaigning,” he added.
He acknowledged the teachers from Foothill did help him along the way, even if he did not realize it at the time. He cited Mr. Kavigan for showing him the ropes of the government; Mr. Wright for helping him discover his talent for public speaking through the senior project and helping him explore new and interesting things; and Ms. McDermott for always wanting him to strive for the best.
Russo’s age is something of importance to point out, and he agreed. Russo stated that it played a significant role in his campaign. While he agreed that it can turn people away from him, he also sees it as a boon; his young age affords him as the “energy, enthusiasm, drive, and stamina to put in the time and effort.”
Russo also said that the community support has been fairly good. He has received a lot of support from the community and has even been endorsed by a former city council member.
Russo plans to invigorate the community by hearing from the citizens themselves. “I want to hear from you,” is the first message that appears on his website.
For Foothill knights with the same political ambitions, John advised, “Don’t let people discourage you because of age; try to achieve a high position to effect change.”

FHS Students take on New York

During the first week of October, Lauren Jernigan, Eli McKenzie, and Charlie Zehner traveled to New York to attend the All American High School Film Festival.
The three Foothill students were invited to attend after their short comedy “Grocery Store” was chosen as an official selection. “Grocery Store,” as well as hundreds of other student-made films, was screened at the AMC theatre in Times Square, followed by an awards ceremony at the King’s Theatre in Brooklyn.
Although not nominated for an award, the trio are honored to have had their work displayed and celebrated in Times Square.
Grateful for the memories they made, Lauren is especially fond of her experience photographing strangers in Washington Square Park, due to their willingness to participate and the beautiful environment that buzzed with “life and excitement.”
Eli’s favorite memory is of the awards ceremony, when the group was surrounded by many other students who shared their passion for film and creativity.
Exploring the city and walking the red carpet are Charlie’s most memorable experiences, and he hopes to return next year.

Ring Ring! Change is Calling

The bell schedule this year has been chaotic to say the least. The fact that teachers have to ask their students to check what time we get out is enough evidence to suggest that there is a problem.
The new tutorial does not work as intended, seeing how last year there was an easy system to leave your class and get work done almost everyday, while now you have only two days a week and not enough time to get any real work done.
As for me, I arrive at school before second period but with all the different schedules and no clear communication, I am late almost 50% of the time. The old tutorial seemed the most efficient out of any we have had.
Seeing how almost no one has the schedule memorized, most students have no way to plan ahead for their classes and activities. This is a major issue for both project planning and using class time correctly.
This can be especially bad because different students across campus start and end school at all different times. There are seniors
who leave at 4th period and juniors who leave at fifth; some students come at second period and some come at zero period.
There should be a master schedule template issued to students displaying the different schedules as there are many varying from assembly, late start, minimum day, and tutorial schedules. We used to have this last year in the from of the Foothill app, so maybe revamping this for the new schedules would work.

Meme Morgue

Hello again, and welcome back to another fresh segment in the meme chronicles. Last we talked, I went over the intricacies and nuances of THANOS CAR. This month, in honor of the Halloween spirit I have taken on the role of mortician and on today’s autopsy table are moth memes.
So without further ado let’s break out the bone saw and see exactly how this meme came about, and what killed it.
This meme was spawned out of the depths of Reddit on July 4, 2018, when user No-Reason27 posted a close-up of a moth outside their window, making it seem giant. This post received 33,000 points on the thread it was posted on.
This post started jokes in other subreddits about moths being attracted to lamps, which of course turned into memes about moths being attracted to lamps. This all snowballed into a massive surge of moth memes, ones that used text and themes similar to those of the loop memes, which had been relevant just a few weeks before.
These memes were eventually picked up by big Instagram meme pages and the memes were spread to the masses, which of course is usually when a meme hits its peak, the last step in a meme’s life cycle.
I would like to take a second to talk about the essence of a meme; a meme is appealing, or funny even, because it an inside joke, something only a select group of people know about, so as it is spreads across Instagram feeds and Reddit threads the joke slowly loses its meaning until even Facebook moms are aware of the newest meme. This, my friends, is stage 4, what I would like to call meme death.
It would seem, according to Google trend searches for the term moths that the moth meme still had some life left in it. Even though the moth term peaks every year around October, this peak was much higher than normal because of the meme. But there was a new challenger approaching.
On the horizon with great force and elegance, spooky memes took the stage. Instagram and Reddit pages were once again flooded with dancing skeletons and users putting spooky in their names.
And with this change, came a change in the Google analytics. As spooky memes climbed the search term charts, moth took a sharp dive and as of October 7th spooky memes have taken the cake and will most likely not stop climbing until the end of October.
The hostile takeover of spooky memes coupled with the widespread success of the moth meme is ultimately what brought our fateful hero down. May he forever rest in peace and go gracefully into that long goodnight.
In loving memory of moth memes.
