Cuckoo for Coco

Coco, a visually stunning animated movie, represents Pixar at its finest. Filled with dynamic colors and amazing graphics, the movie explores the journey of Miguel, a young Mexican boy who dreams of becoming a musician even though his family does not approve. Miguel, voiced by newcomer Anthony Gonzalez, inexplicably ends up in The Land of the Dead and has to embark on an adventure with colorful characters and jokesters like Hector, voiced by Gael Garcia Bernal, to uncover the secrets of his family’s history.
The movie does a really good job at depicting Mexican culture in an authentic way without making it seem forced. As a Hispanic myself, there were many times throughout the movie in which I was able to relate to the main character and the story as a whole. The multiple references to Mexican culture made me feel right at home. It was also extremely refreshing to see a movie use Mexican culture being the central point of a story without it being overdramatized.
The graphics were extremely detailed and colorful. Pixar and Disney are known for their detailed and vibrant graphics, but Coco goes above and beyond, exceeding every expectation. Also, the character development flowed seamlessly with the plot of the story, making for two hours of fun and laughter.
Overall, the movie is extremely touching and really makes you value everything you have, especially your family. According to FHS freshman Maya Manning, “the vibrant colors and brilliant cameos played an important role.” She added that the movie “sparkles with a little bit of drama and a bit of spice.”
