SoCal Klunkers

Phoebe Yates – Op-Ed Editor

You hear the rumble as a group of night bikers take to the streets blasting music. Meet the SoCal Klunkers; they ride, on average, 15 miles per night through the neighborhoods of Santa Ana, Irvine, Anaheim, Orange, and other parts of central county. With approximately 250 members, the SoCal Klunkers consist of all ages and all genders.

Alex Wolff, a sophomore at OCSA, described the group as “laid back.” He explained that “with older people and families attending, it can be calm.” Alex became a part of the group when he was out riding and ran into the group by chance, adding “that opened the door into the BMX world.” Alex recalled that “SoCal Klunkers became the “big thing” in 2020 when the pandemic first broke out. “It’s been a good way to find people interested in BMX.” Alex stated.

Alex encouraged people to join because it’s a great way to get to know others, but he also warned drivers who may be frustrated with the group to “loosen up.” He continued, “People in bike life are often looking or a way to put their energy towards something positive. Bike life is an outlet. Why shut that down?” You can follow the group’s Instagram page @socal_klunkers. Make sure to stay safe and have fun.
