Are secondary characters better than
main characters?
It’s easy to idolize main characters of a
story: after all, the story is focused on them,
and in cases where the reader has insight
on their every thought and feeling, main
characters are easy to sympathize with.
However, they tend to take the spotlight
off of less prominent characters, such as
secondary characters. Secondary characters
help develop new plotlines and contribute
to twists and turns throughout the story.
They can also provide new perspectives
previously unexplored. Some users believe
secondary characters should even have
their own story or be the main character
instead. Do you believe secondary charac-
ters should be in the limelight rather than
the so-called lead? Vicks Medina, a student,
agreed that secondary characters should be
the limelight rather than the so-called lead.
The reason she agreed was because they’re
more colorful than the main perspective
characters.
There are many secondary charac-
ters, for example, Killua from “Hunter X
Hunter”. Killua brings action into the an-
ime because not only is he the best friends
of the main character but he also has pow-
ers that make him exciting. Also, Mushu
from “Mulan”, is another example of a
secondary character. He brings animation
and color to the movie. He is a guardian
and protector for Mulan by helping her face
challenges throughout the movie.
Therefore, secondary characters make a
huge impact in the storyline of any novel,
tv-shows, or movie.
We all tend to like the main characters
because the main focus is on them. As
their story goes, we follow alongside the
main characters because they are the spot-
light as though the secondary characters are
not able to get the “time to shine”, they
give main characters a lively and interesting
character. Therefore, secondary characters
take a big part in any storyline of a novel,
movie, or a tv-show.
