“Scream” is a slasher television series based on the original series of horror movies that originated in 1996. “Scream” was developed by Jill Blotevogel, Dan Dworkin, and Jay Beattie for MTV, but both seasons are currently on Netflix. The first season premiered on June 30, 2015, and a special Halloween two-hour special aired on October 18, this year.
The show follows a series of murders in a town called Lakewood. The murders revolve around the main character Emma Duval, who seems to be at the heart of the town’s dark past. The chain reaction of death is set off by a cyberbullying incident that turns into a brutal murder. Throughout the show, Emma’s group of friends is threatened, becoming the subject of harassment and attack for the masked killer. In a town where anybody could be the killer, and anybody could become a victim, Emma Duval must work to uncover the mask in an attempt to protect those that she loves.
The style that the person behind the mask takes on stays true to the original concept of ominous text messages, and distorted voice calls. The erratic behavior and spooky voice, help add tension and suspense to the atmosphere of the series, leaving you on the edge of your seat wondering what strings the killer will pull next, as nobody is safe.
When watching “Scream,” the killer’s face is kept hidden behind an unsettling mask until the finale, so I was left in suspense as the show took various twists and turns. If you’re in search of a show that serves its suspenseful purpose for the Halloween season without going overboard on the scare factor, “Scream” is for you. With a tasteful amount of gore and questionable teenage decisions that are enough to make you want to pull out your own hair, “Scream” is a solid pick.
