Don’t feel safe around police? Have no fear, police body cameras are here! Well, almost here.
In August, Tustin City Council approved the purchase of 100 body cameras for the city’s police officers. The purchase totaled $670,600 for all the technology, including upgrades for patrol cars. Each camera is the size of a credit card, and weighs almost nothing. Cameras can be worn above the shirt pocket line, or on the belt.
The council claims the cameras serve not only to document what happens as evidence, but also to let the public know that our officers are doing the right thing when serving our community.
There are numerous options for the different types of cameras. Some have a button to stop recording, and others automatically start to record when the patrol car goes at speeds above 75 mph. Some cities such as Fullerton already have their cameras out in the field, ready in action.
Benefits include handy video evidence, and improved behavior in some officers. Additionally, if an officer turns on emergency lights, or the siren, the camera and the body camera is automatically turned on.
The camera has the same field of vision as the human eye so there’s still hope if you’re trying to sneak away. With that being said, remember, there are three eyes on you now, not two.
